Southern Decadence - 8/29 - 9/2/2019

John Dunlop

Southern Decadence is an annual 6-day event held by the gay and lesbian community during Labor Day Weekend, culminating in a parade through the French Quarter on the Sunday before Labor Day. “Decadence”, as it’s commonly referred to, originated in 1972 as an end-of-summer party where 40-50 friends, both gay and straight, dressed as their favorite decadent Southerner. The group threw another party two weeks later to bid farewell to a friend who left New Orleans to join his partner in Michigan. Decadence is like Mardi Gras in that there are parades, bead throwing, street and dance parties. Southern Decadence can be sexual in tone and is generally geared towards adult revelers. Have some decadent fun in the sun!

Run with the Bulls in New Orleans on Saturday, August 24th!

John Dunlop

San Fermin in Nueva Orleans pays homage to the world famous Encierro of Pamplona, Spain, a.k.a. The Running of the Bulls. Instead of bovines, the bulls are actually RollerBulls played by skaters selected from roller derby leagues around the world including New Orleans’ all-female flat-track derby team the Big Easy Rollergirls! And your participation in this fun event benefits the Beth’s Friends Forever and Big Easy Animal Rescue charities! There are also super fun events on the Friday before and Sunday after! Join the thousands of  runners and hundreds RollerBulls as they bring their version of Pamplona’s Fiesta to New Orleans!

(Note: this fun charity event was originally scheduled for 7/13, but was postponed due to weather.)

Happy Birthday, Ivan Neville!

John Dunlop

Ivan Neville was born in New Orleans on August 19, 1959, to one of the great musical families of the Big Easy. He is the son of Aaron Neville and nephew to members of The Neville Brothers, and has clearly inherited the family’s legendary musical talent. He is an accomplished multi-instrumentalist, singer and songwriter who has been performing in bands since 1977. Ivan has joined his father and uncles in The Neville Brothers, was a member of Bonnie Raitt’s band in the 1980’s, was a member of Keith Richards’ X-Pensive Winos tour, and has played with numerous musical luminaries including the Rolling Stones, Don Henley, Robbie Robertson, Delbert McClinton and Rufus. Neville and his cousin, Ian Neville (son of Art Neville) formed Dumpstaphunk in the early 2000s and play their own incomparable brand of funk and jazz. Neville is also a member of JazzFest phenom Dragon Smoke, along with Eric Lindell, Rob Mercurios and Stanton Moore. No matter who he is playing with, never miss an opportunity to see Ivan Neville perform! Happy Birthday to NOLA musical royalty!
